Session #1 - Myths of Addiction / Drug of Choice

In this first session we will be welcoming new members and introducing facilitators. Every participant will be provided with an opportunity to share. We will then explore the myths of addictions. Many people have pre-conceived notions and ideas when it comes to understanding the addictions process. Almost everything we think we know about addiction is wrong. These myths hurt families and friends – and they make it harder for people to get well.

For families with a loved one addicted to drugs or alcohol, daily life can revolve around anger, worry, grief and fear. Addiction affects the entire family – emotionally, physically, mentally, and even spiritually. Despite all the anguish felt by a family struggling with addiction, there’s pressure to keep the family “secret” within the four walls of their home. With all the stigma that surrounds the disease, we wanted to break down the top ten myths that we hear about families that have an addicted loved one.  We will answer any questions related to video power points and drug of choice.

Session #2 - Addictions as a Brain Disease

Addiction is a chronic brain disease that’s more about the neurology of the brain than the outward manifestations of behavioral problems and poor choices, according to a group of addiction medicine professionals. In this session, we will have an open discussion about the following:

  • How addiction alters your brain’s reward system
  • How impulse control is also altered
  • Characteristics of addiction and other features of addictive behavior
  • Impaired control and judgement problems
  • How addiction can cause cognitive changes
  • How addiction can cause emotional changes

Session #3 - Stages of Change & Levels of Involvement

In this session you will do a self assessment utilizing the level of involvement model and the stages of change model which identifies the stages that people go through when changing behavior.

Self reflection and acceptance of oneself is one of the first and most important steps of recovery.

Acknowledgement of where you are at, in this present moment is essential for developing your goals for recovery and living the life you desire to live.

Session #4 - Triggers and Cravings

The question is not, will I experience triggers and cravings, but rather WHEN will I experience triggers and cravings?

We must recognize that experiencing triggers and cravings is not simply about having enough will power to abstain but in fact is more related to the pattern that has over time developed in your brain that automatically triggers and increases cravings. In this session, participants will self-reflect on personal triggers and develop a plan to avoid them.

Session #5 - Planning for Your Journey of Recovery

For every destination there is a road to get there. Having a personal plan for your recovery is crucial. This may include harm reduction or abstinence-based goals.

During this session, we will highlight the importance of creating a plan for your journey by creating smart goals which are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and anchored with a time frame. Having goals will keep you hopeful, mindful, focused, and accountable.

Session #6 - Coping Strategies

Your addiction has given you the opportunity to change your life. Changing your life is what makes recovery both difficult and rewarding.

This session provides a framework in assisting participants to move forward with healthy ways of coping and changing their circumstance.

Participants will explore the experience of living with an addiction, be provided with an understanding of contributions and protective factors and learn how to integrate strategies in the way that respects the person and supports their health.

Session #7 - Healthy Relationships (Communication & Boundaries)

Healthy relationships will make you feel valued, supported, challenged, encouraged and hopeful. On the other hand, toxic relationships can be manipulating, blaming, bullying, abusive and violent which will have you feeling depressed, hopeless, anxious and full of shame.

Whether it is spouses, family members, friends or co-workers everyone has a part to play in your recovery, knowingly and unknowingly. Being able to set appropriate and healthy boundaries in your relationships and life will set you on the path of healing and recovery.

Session #8 - Crisis + Stress Management

Crisis and Stress are unfortunately a reality of life. While we can't always control our circumstances, we can control how you respond to them. At times, it is easy to fall into the pattern of ineffective and unhealthy coping. The more we rely on these unhealthy patterns the more they become engrained in our everyday life.

These unhealthy strategies of coping only seek to destroy the potential you have for a happy healthy life. In this session we will explore healthy coping strategies and will develop a crisis management toolbox to rely on when faced with difficult circumstances.

Session #9 - Self Compassion

Have you ever heard the saying “you’re your own worst critic?” This tends to be the case for most people, we are hard on ourselves, particularly if we get the sense that we don’t match up in some way.

This session is designed to explore the concepts of self compassion and how to cultivate self-compassion by teaching skills for responding in a kind, compassionate way whenever you are experiencing painful emotions. Research shows self-compassion reduces depression, anxiety and stress – issues that often fuel addictions. It also has been linked with greater happiness and life satisfaction.

Session #10 - Steps to Building a Balanced and Meaningful Life

In this session, we will explore holistic ways to build a satisfying, balanced and meaningful life. One of the keys to overcoming addiction is to build a new life and create new memories.

Some of what we will discuss is healthy routines of nutrition, personal hygiene, sleep, rest, avoid fatigue and illness, play and have fun and ready yourself mentally and spiritually.

Session #11 - Hope & Altruism

In this session, we will discuss the 2 different kinds of happiness hedonia and eudemonia.

Each affect the body and mind in profoundly different ways.

With that, we will discuss Altruism which is the principle and moral practice of concern for happiness of other human beings or other animals which will create a sense of belonging, reduce isolation and simply just feels good!

Session #12 - War of Art (Growth Mindset)

Fear, resistance…..are words no one ever wants to hear or experience, yet by embracing and using these companions as a compass on your journey, this will allow you to conquer and achieve more than you ever thought imaginable.

See how overcoming resistance and fear through a strong positive mindset is not only beneficial but crucial to achieve your purpose in life.
